Adelaide Crows, Matt Crouch, blacklisted, contract, career, trade, whispers, Bryce Gibbs, Matthew Nicks, dropped

Matt Crouch’s “messy” contract situation at Adelaide has taken another turn with claims the midfielder has been “blacklisted” – despite having another year to run on his deal.

Crouch was reportedly left “furious” this week when told he won’t be receiving a new deal at the Crows.

The 2017 All Australian and club best and fairest has been limited to just 11 games this season after falling out of favor under coach Matthew Nicks, and has played just eleven since being dropped for Round 15.

SEN’s Andrew Hayes claimed Crouch had been “blacklisted” and would not represent the club again in 2022.

Co-host Kane Cornes said it isn’t as simple as the Crows cutting ties with the 27-year-old.

He recalled his personal experience of “digging in” when told he wasn’t wanted at Port Adelaide – despite having years to run on his deal, as his young son’s medical needs took priority.

“I don’t think Matt Crouch is going to dig in like that,” he said.

“(But) he holds some of the power here. If you don’t want to be traded, he doesn’t have to be traded.”

Cornes said he assumed another club would be willing to take a chance on Crouch, given the excellent form he’s been in for the SANFL since being dropped.

“I assume that with him in the prime of his career and if there is another club that hell absolutely go,” he said.

“It’s an awkward situation.

“You can see the anger in it. I don’t think he would quite understand what’s going on because there’s other players running around the midfield at Adelaide not doing any damage either.

“He would feel like, ‘OK I’ve tried to work on my game like this. But you’re not watching. Whatever I do, you’ve blacklisted me (to use your term) anyway so it’s not going to matter.

“There will be a club at the end of the year I think we will have a look at him.”

But Cornes warned Crows’ fans not to expect anything in return.

“If you’re a Crows fan wondering what you’ll get back, you’re going to get nothing. It’ll be like a pick in the 60s or 70s, now the fact they are just happy to get him off the books.

“He’s not going to be playing in the AFL side again.”

Cornes labeled Adelaide’s midfield “a complete and utter mess” and said the club needed to go to the draft to build from the ground up.

Adelaide footy journalist Michelangelo Rucci warned the Crouch situation could quickly become similar to Bryce Gibbs’ treatment at the end of his career.

“If it’s a repeat of that, then Adelaide hasn’t learn anything at all,” he warned on SEN.

“I would have thought in 2022, there’s really respectful ways to treat people.

“If you’ve got to tell a player its over, we see different options in the team, I hope it’s better than the way they treated Bryce Gibbs at Adelaide.”

Earlier this month, Nicks said he had told Crouch he wanted him at the club in 2023.

“Matty is an important part of our squad,” he said.

“We will just continue to ask Matty to put the head down and I think that has been broadcast from our playing group – they know he is doing what we’re asking.

“He has done an amazing job and went back into the SANFL and performed so we will ask him to keep doing that and then it will become a selection piece, where is that position available?”
